This is a career choice for those who enjoy helping others, are detail-oriented and are looking for a career that is in demand. Medical assistants are considered a valuable member of the health care team and care for patients by providing routine treatment and performing laboratory and/or office duties such as scheduling and greeting patients; insurance billing and coding; managing and maintaining medical records; obtaining and recording vital signs; interviewing patients to obtain medical histories and chief complaints; and assisting with examinations as a medical scribe.

The Medical Coder Certificate provides students with the skills necessary to work in billing offices of hospitals, nursing homes and physicians’ offices. Students in this program are prepared to complete, review and process medical claims to help physicians and hospitals get reimbursed from insurance companies for services and facilities provided to patients. Individuals in this field also help prevent fraudulent medical claims and/or errors in payments and utilize the verbal skills needed to contact insurance companies regarding claims.
