The Ohio Department of Higher Education recently announced that Edison State Community College was one of 30 Ohio colleges and universities to have its Collegiate Purple Star designation renewed for another three years. The renewed designation recognizes institutions for continuing their efforts to support military-connected students.

“Edison State has a long history of honoring and supporting military-connected students, and the renewal of the Collegiate Purple Star designation is proof that the College remains committed to being a military-friendly institution of higher education,” said Edison State President Chris Spradlin.

The Collegiate Purple Star award acknowledges public and independent institutions that are “supportive and inclusive of military-connected students.” Edison State was part of the first cohort of Collegiate Purple Star awardees that received the designation in May 2022. Ohio was the first state to adopt such a designation. Interested institutions can submit an application, and the Collegiate Purple Star Advisory Committee chooses the institutions to receive the designation.

To receive the Collegiate Purple Star designation, institutions must meet certain criteria, which includes having a dedicated point of contact or office on campus for military and veterans; establishing priority registration for veterans and service members; surveying student veterans, service members, and their spouses and dependents about needs and challenges; and allowing for the establishment of student-led groups and organizations for veterans and service members.

“We are proud to assist military-connected students in realizing their dreams by earning a college degree or certificate, and we have created support systems uniquely designed for them,” Spradlin said. “Offering these specialized services to our military-connected students is only a small token of our appreciation for their service to our country. We are honored to have them at Edison State.”
