The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates the demand for pharmacy technicians to grow by 4% through 2029 due to an aging population and higher rates of chronic diseases. To help meet this growing need, Edison State Community College’s Office of Workforce Development & Work-Based Learning and Ed2Go have partnered to offer an online pharmacy technician certification course, preparing students to pursue entry-level positions in the field.

Pharmacy technicians are critical members of the health care field who work alongside pharmacists in hospitals, drug and grocery stores, and other medical settings. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average salary for pharmacy technicians is $40,300 per year.

The online pharmacy technician certification course prepares students to assist pharmacists in packing and distributing medication. Students will learn medical and pharmaceutical terminology, basic anatomy related to the pharmacology of medications, and pharmaceutical calculations.

During the course, students will develop essential skills to succeed as a pharmacy technician, including accuracy, attention to detail, and effective communication. Students gain hands-on learning through an online lab module that provides practical experience in processing orders and identifying correct medication dosing and sourcing.

Course curriculum also includes the ethics of pharmacy practice and education about prescription medications, patient care and interaction, and charges and reimbursement. Additionally, students have the option to perform a hands-on, 130-hour clinical experience.

Upon completion of the course, students will be prepared to sit for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam offered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. This course includes a voucher that covers the exam fee.
