Photographer of the Month -
May - John Thiebeau

Tips of the Month

Fireworks - Color, excitement, fast-paced

Use a tripod and point the camera to the sky area where they will burst. Use a telephoto lens or your longest zoom setting. Focus on infinity or use a far off object to focus those point and shoots on. Use the manual mode (M) with the ap set to f11 and shutter set to 1/3. The ISO should be 200.  Use a cable release so you don't have to stand by the camera the whole time.  When you hear the boom snap the shutter, you want to release the shutter before the smoke forms, though the longer the show goes on the more smoke there is in air.

Practice and you will find some interesting images appearing on you memory card or your film.

Want multiple burst on one frame use the bulb shutter speed and have a black hat or card to hold over the lens between bursts.  With some practice you will be able to capture several bursts on one frame.

Have fun!!

Quote of the Week

"A good photograph is knowing where to stand."
                                               Ansel Adams

Before/After-Image by Tammy Myers

"The club originally suggested that I darken out the background of the image. From looking at the image, you could tell that it was a model hanging in a room in a display. But if I could darken out the background and do something with the lights in the ceiling, it could make the image better.

I took the image into Photoshop and used the magnetic selection tool to select the ship. I saved the selection and created a foreground layer. Then I chose the inverse of the selection, created another layer, and called it the background layer. Next, I darkened out the background layer by adjusting the brightness slider. Then I used the clone stamp to clone the remaining lights to appear as they were stars.

I played around with some of the other settings, hues, contrast, brightened up the foreground layer".
