| The Medical Laboratory
Technician (MLT), also known as Clinical Laboratory
Technician (CLT), is a health care professional
trained in the theory, skills and procedures
necessary to work in the clinical laboratory.
MLT/CLT's obtain, process, test and evaluate
biological samples from patients. Test results
and information gathered from laboratory tests aid
physicians in making an accurate diagnosis and
choosing appropriate treatments for patients.
Graduates receive the Associate
of Applied Science degree. The program
consists of sequential courses which require four
consecutive terms to complete. To extend the
MLT program over more than two years, a person may
take one, two or three general studies or science
classes per semester prior to applying for admission
to the program
Continuation in and graduation
from the MLT program is contingent upon the student
earning a grade of at least "C" in each MLT and
anatomy and physiology course. A grade of "B"
or better is required for MLT 121S.
Classes are held in classrooms
and laboratories, while area hospitals provide
clinical training sites.
Application packets are
available from the MLT Office, Admissions Office,
and the Darke County Campus. Selection of the
class to start MLT classes in August will be made in
March each year. Applicants will be notified
by March 20.
PROGRAM OUTCOMES: The
student must:
- Perform routine
hematology, clinical chemistry, immunohematology,
micribiology, serology/immunology, coagulation,
molecular, and other emerging clinical
laboratory tests according to established
protocols and procedures.
- Evaluate, correlate, and
assure accuracy, validity, and quality control
of laboratory information.
- Make specimen oriented
decisions on predetermined criteria, including a
working knowledge of critical values.
- Assess, analyze, and make
decisions related to clinical situations,
information management, regulatory compliance,
education, and quality assurance whenever
laboratory testing is researched, developed or

- Demonstrate safe working
habits and apply universal safety procedures in
the handling of chemical, radiological, and
biological materials and processes.
- Demonstrate
