COMPASS testing
Students who plan to attend Edison Community College should
plan to take the COMPASS test
in the spring of their
senior year. The test is given at Edison and
satellite sites and
the results are used to help place students in classes in
the fall. Many students need to take the test more than once
to pass it and test out of remedial classes.
Plan to take the test this
spring. If your results are good, you will be ready to enter Edison in the
fall. If you still need to work on one part of the test, you can study and
try it again in the summer.
To be eligible for your College Tech
Prep scholarship,
you must pass all three parts of the test. So make time to come in and take
the test!
Frequently Asked Questions
What is COMPASS?
COMPASS is a comprehensive computerized
adaptive testing system that helps place students in appropriate courses in
reading, writing and math. This assessment is part of Edison community
College's enrollment and registration process. The test will determine
which classes students should schedule during their first semester. It
is not a pass/fail exam. The goal is to ensure students are placed in
classes at the correct level--not too easy and unchallenging and not so
difficult they are overwhelmed.
What does it mean that COMPASS
is an "adaptive" test?
COMPASS adjusts the level of a test to the skills and expertise of the
individual test taker and avoids presenting items that contribute little to
measurement. This flexibility typically reduces the number of items
and testing time required while increasing the accuracy of placement
results.
How long does COMPASS take?
Generally, allow approximately two hours to
complete the entire test. Remember, COMPASS is not timed, so
individuals may work at their own pace and are encouraged to take their
time.
Do students need an appointment
to take COMPASS?
Yes. Call 1-800-922-3722 ext. 7850 to schedule an appointment at
Edison Community College's main campus, or 937-548-5546 to schedule an
appointment at the Darke County Campus.
Do students need computer
skills?
Computer skills are not necessary. COMPASS is user friendly and
designed for individuals with little or no computer experience. A
testing proctor will assist students in getting started. COMPASS is
self-directed and is untimed.
Should students review?
Yes! Reviewing is an excellent way to refresh basic math, reading and
writing skills. There are practice questions for each subject area
that can be found at:
http://www.act.org/compass/sample/index.html
When should students complete
their COMPASS assessment?
Complete placement testing before meeting with an academic advisor
and prior to registering for classes.
When do students get their
results?
Results of the test will be provided upon completion of the test.
Students need to bring their test results when meeting with their academic
advisors. At that time, the test results will be explained and
recommendations will be made for courses based on the test scores and chosen
major.
Is there a fee for taking the
COMPASS?
No, the test if free, and retesting is permitted.
