LEG 110S Introduction to Legal Assisting
Overview of the legal system and the work, skills, and ethical responsibilities of a legal assistant. Basic substantive and procedural terminology associated with the major areas of the law is introduced along with fundamental techniques of research, case analysis, and information gathering. Lab fee.
LEG 130S Legal Research and Writing
In-depth approach to using primary and secondary sources of the law. Parallel assignments will be given involving federal and state material. Research skills will be developed using both books and electronic databases. Internet skills are recommended. Prerequisite: LEG 110S and ENG 121S. Lab fee.
LEG 211S Probate Administration
Extensive study of decedents' estates with consideration to the various trust options and pre-death decisions that can be arranged. Students will draft wills and trust agreements, complete court forms, and prepare estate tax returns and fiduciary accountings. Prerequisite: LEG 110S
LEG 216S Family Law
Comprehensive study of the concepts of marriage, divorce, dissolution, child custody and support, and related topics. Ohio law and the drafting of appropriate documents are emphasized. Prerequisite: LEG 110S
LEG 218S Law Office Management
Overview of management and techniques as they apply to the law office. Common procedures for various types and sizes of law practices, accounting, fees and billing, records management, and state-of-the-art technology will be discussed. Prerequisite: LEG110S and CIT 100S or CIT 110S.
LEG 231S Litigation I
Overview of a civil trial with emphasis on the rules of civil procedure and the considerations in the early stages of a lawsuit.  The substantive law of torts is taught and presented as the basis from which a case is developed that proceeds through the courts.  Students consider jurisdiction and draft the necessary pleadings at the commencement of a lawsuit. Prerequisite: LEG 110S and LEG 130S.
LEG 232S Litigation II
Continuation of the litigation process begun in Litigation I concentrating on the evidentiary aspects of the lawsuit from the discovery phase through the disposition of the case by the trial court and ultimately the appellate court. Emphasis is given to gathering evidence, drafting appropriate documents, summarizing depositions, introducing evidence at trial, and perfecting an appeal. Prerequisite: LEG 231S.
LEG 235S Business Organizations
In-depth study of business entities, including sole proprietorships, partnerships, and corporations, and the preparation of documents necessary for their formation and operation. Prerequisite: LEG 110S.
LEG 240S Real Estate Law
Survey of the law affecting real estate transactions. Various forms of ownership, instruments of conveyancing, brokerage, Ohio real estate law, landlord-tenant relationships, fair-housing legislation, and land-use control are covered. Students will search titles to real estate and draft instruments used in real estate transactions. Prerequisite: LEG 110S
LEG 290L Internship Experience
Designed to give students practical experience through 14 hours per week of supervised work in a law firm, corporate legal department, or government agency involved in the legal system. Experiences are discussed and integrated with academic work in weekly seminars. Prerequisite: LEG 110S, LEG 130S, LEG 231S, LEG 240S, BUS 123S, a 2.5 GPA in all LEG courses, and department permission.  Corequisite: LEG 290R
LEG 290R Internship Seminar
See LEG 290L for description and prerequisites. Corequisite: LEG 290L. 
LEG 299S Selected Topics in Paralegal
An in-depth study of a particular selected topic in Paralegal. Prerequisite: Dependent on topic. Lab fee.
