Discussion Student Help Desk
Initiatives
The Student Help Desk was proposed two years ago and approved by ETC and
President’s Cabinet. The idea is combining the Learning Center, Library,
and Internet Café into one place where students can go to for help. At
the present time, the physical space is available but not the human
resources due to budget restraints.
The Student Help Desk would be staffed by interns but would need someone
to supervise and train the interns, develop training manuals, and act as
a liaison to other departments. The ideal person would be part-time
instructor, part-time supervisor. In a perfect world, the position would
be advertised in May, interviews in June, and a start date of July 1,
2004.
Brad Reed feels a student help desk would be a great retention and
marketing tool and perhaps we should look at what it will cost if it is
not implemented. He suggested setting up a Zoomerang survey to assess
how much time is spent answering questions on ConnectWeb, Blackboard,
WebAdvisor, etc. It was suggested everyone keep track of questions they
repeatedly get to compile a FAQ list.
A sub-committee has been formed to develop a NSF grant to fund a student
help desk. The committee members are: Patti Ross, Denny Myers, Cecelia
Green, Jesse Parete, Cathy Essinger, Truman Bashore, Mary Beth Aust-Keefer,
Chuck Steel, Tim Sanderson, Leslie Spivey, Rebecca Schinaman, Steve
Whiteman, Bill Baker, Michael Taint, and Brad Reed. Dr. Sharon Robinson
will be assisting in the writing of the grant.
It was also suggested that, in addition to a student help desk, a kiosk
be placed in or near Student Services that would run a demo of how
WebAdvisor, etc. works. This would be an unsupervised help station
complete with touch screen. Some of the cost of equipment and software
would be covered under the grant.
Sandy Brubaker suggested that the renewed Perkins Grant may be a
possible source for funds.
The sub-committee will continue to work towards a proposal to take to
President’s Cabinet by the end of February. The next meeting of the NSF
Grant Committee will be February 16 from 12-2 pm. Everyone is welcome to
attend.
