Edison Community College
hosts
UVMC fitness course;
Ten-week session starts June 10
Edison Community College hosts a UVMC fitness course, described as a “High/Lo Cardio Workout,” on Mondays and Wednesdays from June 10 to August 14 at 4:30 p.m.
The one-hour classes will be held in the North Hall exercise room on Edison’s main campus in Piqua. They are open to the general public and to Edison students, faculty and staff. The self-paced classes are designed to accommodate a wide range of ages and fitness levels.
The instructor is Carol Palmer, a Piqua resident who has taught UVMC Fitness programs since March 2000. Palmer holds certification from NDEITA (National Dance Exercise Instructor’s Training Association) as a Group Fitness Instructor and also has a bachelor’s degree in music from Miami University.
“The fitness course is a hi/lo (high intensity/low impact) aerobics workout with weights,” Palmer said.
“The ten weeks of classes begin by gradually introducing three to four fitness routines in a step-by-step process.”
She noted that by adding new elements as the classes progress from week to week, “even the novice fitness student can easily follow the routines.”
Classes open with a 7-10 minute warm-up and eventually expand to 30-35 minutes alternating between cardio exercise and weights. An additional segment includes 10-12 minutes of floor work for abdominal exercises followed by a “cool down.”
The Edison exercise room is equipped with fit balls and some selected sizes of hand weights. Palmer suggests that beginners use 1-3 lb. weights; intermediate students, 3-5 lb. weights, and advanced, up to 8 lb. weights.
For this course and other UVMC classes starting the week of June 10, the general public can pick up registration forms and class schedules at several UVMC locations. They are: Outpatient Care Center/North, 280 Looney Rd., Piqua; Outpatient Care Center/South, 998 Dorset Rd., Suite 105, Troy; Hyatt Center, 450 N. Hyatt St., Suite 102, Tipp City; and Rehab Services at the Upper Valley Medical Center.
