Edison Hosts Talk on US-Arab
Relations
Edison Community College brings an expert on US-Arab issues to Piqua on Monday for a 4:30 p.m. presentation.
The event— sponsored by Edison’s Office of Student and Community Activities-- is free and open to the public. It takes place in the theater in North Hall on Edison’s main campus.
The topic, "Unholy Alliance? Religion and Politics in the Middle East," will be addressed by Dr. Judith Martin, an associate professor of
religious studies at the University of Dayton. Dr. Martin also serves as the executive director of the Ohio Valley Committee on US-Arab Relations.
The notion that the Palestinian-Israel conflict has been going on for 4,000 years is commonly asserted by various information sources,
thereby implying that the problem is unsolvable. But is this really the
case?
Martin’s presentation will challenge any such claim by examining the evolution of the conflict, by considering the way in which
religion influences our way of viewing the parties involved, and by
discussing how Americans can play a role in promoting a just and lasting
peace in the Middle East.
The UD faculty member teaches undergraduate courses in World Religions and in Women and Religion. She also teaches a graduate course titled Dialogue Among Religions.
Her involvement with the Ohio Valley Committee includes educating Americans about Muslims and the Middle East. She has taken part in six study tours of the Middle East and has met with a number of Israeli and Palestinian leaders.
