Edison Community College
makes learning fun for teens; Teen Challenge 2002 starts June 10
Shape up on geometry. Or spice up the Spanish.
Designed to make learning fun, a new Edison Community College summer educational program for 12 to 16 year olds opens June 10.
Classes during the first week explore a variety of subjects, ranging from ancient Egypt and the culture of France to the survival of plants and animals in the outdoor environment. Other workshops offer tips on studying for school, sitting for children, and shooting hoops on the court.
Thirty-seven courses, called Teen Challenge 2002, are set for June 10 to 13 and for June 17 to 20. Class times are 10 a.m. to 12 Noon and 1 to 3 p.m. on Edison’s main campus in Piqua.
During a June 10 to 13 morning course, students will learn how stories can be told visually and how effective use of color, light, and composition affect the message. Students in “Telling Stories with Art” will create a triptic painting, as well as a piece developed in a mixed media format.
The June 10 to 13 morning course titled “Project Wild” discovers the hazards of newly hatched sea turtles and the difficulties faced by a herd of deer. “Fantastic French” enables students to pick up on the French pronunciation of basic phrases, days of the week, and food and drink.
In afternoon classes the week of June 10, participants will acquire study skills to improve taking notes and tests. “Savvy Studying” matches students’ interests with various career fields. In “Wild, Wild Web,” teens will bring photos from home to Edison to build their own web pages.
“Robotronics,” presented the mornings of June 17 to 20, motivates students to rummage through a multitude of electronic components to build creations of their own. Youngsters will operate a robotic lawn mower and learn the basics of electricity in a fun way.
Teens will learn to appreciate all kinds of music--including country, rock, blues, and jazz-- in an afternoon course starting June 17.
Two additional Teen Challenge courses instructed by American Red Cross representatives teach skills in CPR and baby sitting.
Some classes are repeated in more than session. All 37 courses are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Because enrollments are limited, early registration is advised.
A parent or guardian must grant permission for a student to attend Teen Challenge 2002. Since ability and maturity levels of teens differ, parents are advised to consider school performance, maturity and interests when choosing classes.
Register on the main campus at Enrollment Services in Room 020. Sign up by phone using VISA or
