Edison provides area high school students
with “college decision” information at November 30 TGIF.

During the November 30  meeting at Edison Community College, high school juniors and seniors were able To Get Information First () before making  the often difficult decision about higher education.

A total of 130 interested students from all over the upper Miami Valley gathered in the North Hall on Edison’s main campus in Piqua.

Hare, who coordinated the event, helped participants to select from concurrent sessions that highlighted topics such as ways to make college affordable, the new millennium’s hot careers, the smooth process of credit transfer, and learning techniques necessary for being successful in the classroom.

High school students may be surprised by some of the information they should know before making a college choice, Hare alluded.

“More than one-half of the college freshman and sophomores in the United States are studying at community colleges,” he stated. Hare detailed that most of these students have their sights set on an associate degree and a position in a technical field only two years after high school or a bachelor’s degree and a career start four years after the twelfth grade.

Approximately 85 percent of the 2000 and 2001 graduates from Ohio community and technical colleges are employed within the state or are continuing their studies at a state-assisted college or university, Hare noted.

Because of constantly emerging and advancing technology in the workplace today, he added that a higher education experience has never been more important for high school students.

“Community and technical college grads earn about $250,000 more, on average, in a lifetime than people with only high school diplomas,” Hare explained.
High school students are encouraged to use the  session at Edison as “a college visit day” and communicate these plans to their high school counselors as soon as possible.

is the first of a series of similar events for high school students to be arranged by Edison over the next several months.
