Two Edison
Students Earn Nominations
for All-Ohio Academic Team
Edison Community College students Karen Zelnick from Troy and Cedric Johnson of Sidney have been nominated for the All-Ohio Academic Team, ranking them among the state’s top community college students.
The Ohio Association of Community Colleges (OACC) and Phi Theta Kappa, the national honors organization for two-year campuses, coordinate this activity-- which recognizes the achievements of students at two-year institutions.
Introduced in 1997 to spotlight outstanding sophomores at the state’s community colleges, the program announces in May its selections for members of All-Ohio first, second, and third teams. The top 20 nominees chosen will comprise the first two groups and earn cash scholarships.
Edison has had at least a pair of students honored each year. A 3.25 grade-point average (GPA) is required for all nominees.
Zelnick, who graduates from both Edison and Troy High School (HS) this spring, has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA. A Post-Secondary Enrollment Options student, Zelnick plans to transfer her Edison credits to Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where she enrolls in early September. She will pursue a journalism degree.
Following completion of an associate of arts transfer degree in May, Johnson will forward his Edison credits to a political science program at a major university. He has ambitions to later enroll in Law School to study contract law.
A captain for the Edison basketball squad, Johnson has received national distinction as a member of the United States Academic All-American Team selected by the National Junior College Athletic Association. He holds a 3.7 GPA.
Johnson has also earned special praise from Edison coaches for his unique display of integrity and citizenship.
In 2001, Johnson was honored with the Sidney Black Achiever’s Scholarship. He has actively raised funds for non-profit charitable organizations. In addition, he has served as a member of Edison’s student leadership team.
Among Johnson’s favorite leisure activities is the reading of legal materials, including John Grisham’s book on law titled “The Partner.”
Zelnick has aspirations of writing for a large newspaper some day or authoring and illustrating stories for children. She is a member of Alpha Lambda Eta, the Edison chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, and also the National Honor Society at Troy HS.
A former president of the local Teen Advisory Board, Zelnick is currently the president of Young Women, a church youth group. A Red Cross volunteer, she has also assisted in the development of students with learning disabilities at Riverside of Miami County.
Zelnick said that one of her most satisfying college experiences is serving as an Edison tutor in such subjects as math, English, and biology.
“Knowledge and skills are critical for everyone,” Zelnick noted. “Its rewarding for me to be able to share what I’ve learned with others so they, too, can succeed academically.”
Johnson and Zelnick receive statewide recognition when they join other All-Ohio Academic Team members for a May 8 luncheon at the Hyatt on Capitol Square in Columbus.
Zelnick will be a 2002 Troy High School graduate.
Johnson graduated from Sidney High School in 1999.
