New Darke County Campus
Expands Offerings to Students
Edison Community College’s new and expanded location at 601 Wagner Avenue in Greenville means more courses and more programs.
According to Janice Michael, who was recently named dean of Edison’s Darke County Campus (DCC), the local community college is now offering additional technical courses in both engineering technology and computer information technology.
“We’re pleased to better meet the needs of our Darke, Mercer, and Preble county students in Ohio and also our eastern Indiana students,” Michael said.
She detailed that the renovated facility occupied by Edison spans some 17,000 square feet-- more than double the size of Edison’s previous Darke County site on East Main in Greenville.
Lab facilities at the Wagner Ave. location enable Edison to offer, for the first time, Darke County courses in plastics manufacturing, engineering graphics, and hydraulics and pneumatics. In addition, 200-level prerequisites for the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineering (MCSE) Program are also available. These courses highlight operating system concepts, micro hardware, and computer networking.
Michael pointed out that full associate degree programs in business management and human services can be completed at the DCC, without the need for picking up courses at the main campus in Piqua.
Associate of Science and Associate of Arts transfer programs are available from start to finish at the Wagner Ave. campus. Such programs serve as the first two years of the bachelor’s degree and transfer in full to most four-year colleges and universities.
During the current spring semester, Edison’s Darke County Campus offers 60 different courses at various times. Many meet two evenings per week. Several are presented on Saturdays. Nearly three dozen convene weekly on a single evening.
The new Darke County Campus features six traditional classrooms, four computer laboratories, plus the manufacturing lab. Space dedicated to learning assistance is now provided.
Room for two to three times more parking also exists.
“We have the flexibility to expand enrollment from 700 or 800 to 1200 or even 1500,” Michael stated. Edison has experienced enrollment growth at the Darke County site for
several years.
The Wagner Ave. location is situated in what is called the Darke County Government Complex. Edison leases the space from the Darke County Commission, which purchased it from the Kroger Company.
