Chip Hare steps away from
coaching to pursue master’s; Search for Edison head basketball coach begins
Chip Hare, the head basketball coach at Edison Community College for the last two years, has resigned from this position to pursue a master’s degree.
The 1995 University of Dayton (UD) graduate, who is among the Top 20 on UD’s all-time scoring list, said that “the time is right to step away from basketball and further my education with an advanced degree.”
He left open the option of returning to coaching “at an undetermined time in the future after finishing the master’s.”
Hare said that “the pursuit of excellence in the classroom” by his teams will always be one of his
Edison coaching highlights. The 2001-2002 squad scored a 3.25 cumulative grade-point average, the highest in school history.
Hare’s Edison teams produced four national junior college Academic All-Americans. They also generated a first team all-conference player and a first team all-region player.
At the close of his team’s season in March, Hare was nominated as the 2001-2002 Coach of the Year in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference
(OCCAC).
“In Matt Rutledge, I had an outstanding assistant the past two years,” Hare said. “I was also blessed with very coachable student athletes.”
Hare was Edison’s assistant head coach in 1997-1998 and in 1998-1999. He also served as head coach of the Sidney High School women’s team in 1999-2000.
In addition to coaching, Hare has served the college as the full-time recruiting coordinator. He will maintain this position with Edison.
As one of the institution’s primary recruiters, Hare markets Edison’s features, benefits, and academic programs to high school students and working adults by visiting schools and area employers.
“I’m committed to my full-time assignment in the student development office and look forward to further enhancing the image and growth of Edison,” Hare stated.
The Piqua resident added that he would keep his hands in athletics at the college by providing any assistance he could for Kim Rank, Edison’s athletics coordinator and women’s head coach.
“We’ll miss Chip’s daily contributions to coaching,” said Rank, adding that Hare has redefined what Edison basketball is all about. “Chip is a quality person who has established a quality program,” he emphasized.
Individuals wishing to be considered for the head basketball position (Job #A0302) at Edison should forward a letter of interest and resume to the personnel office in Room 136 at 1973 Edison Drive, Piqua, Ohio 45356. Selected persons will be interviewed and the search continued until the coaching position is filled.
Rank noted that applicants for the position should have basketball coaching experience at the high school or college level.
“We are looking for a coach with integrity who has demonstrated that he will maintain high standards,” Rank
noted.
