Edison
Trustee Elected Chair-elect of
Board for National Community
College Organization
Dr. Richard N. Adams of Troy, one of nine trustees at
Edison Community College, is the new chair-elect of the board of directors for the Association of Community College
Trustees (ACCT).
He was elected at the ACCT national conference held
this fall in Philadelphia.
Adams recently completed a one-year term as ACCT's
vice-chair and was only the second Ohio community college board member to ever be elected to an office with
the national association. He will continue to serve as a member of the ACCT board of directors.
Brenda Knight, the previous chair-elect and trustee
for a community college district in California, will serve as the new chair of the ACCT board of directors.
ACCT is a non-profit educational organization that
represents more than 6,500 trustees from nearly 600
governing boards of public and private community,
technical, and junior colleges in the United States.
The organization’s primary purpose is to advocate
for community colleges in Washington, D.C., and to conduct educational programs that assist community college
trustees in fulfilling their responsibilities.
At the state level, Adams was board chair for the Ohio Association of Community Colleges (OACC) from 1997 to 1999
and was on the OACC executive committee from 1995 to 2001.
Earlier this year, Adams and Edison trustees
met with nearly one thousand community college officials from around the country at a national legislative seminar.
The group unveiled its list of 2002 Community
College Federal Legislative Priorities.
According to Adams, these goals included:
-
Raising the Pell Grant maximum to $4500
-
Expanding the scope of the Hope Scholarship Tax Credit for needy students
-
Increasing assistance for associate degree nursing programs which prepare 60 percent of the newly registered nurses
-
Improving access to community college programs for welfare recipients
During the conference, US Labor Secretary Elaine Chao commended community colleges “for doing an outstanding job” as they prepare the workforce for the 21st century.
Chao stated, “You are doing all you can to make sure no worker is left behind.”
As an Edison trustee, Adams is currently serving a second six-year term which culminates in 2003.
A Miami County commissioner from 1992 to 2000, Adams was vice-chairman of the Edison board in 1993 and 1994, and
chairman in 1995 and 1996.
