Edison Community College led the way among the state’s 23 two-year
institutions in competition for the 2003 All-Ohio Academic Teams.
Edison placed three students on the first team and a fourth student on
the second group. No other community college in Ohio was better
represented.
The three Edison students selected to the first team are Brandy
Foster, a 1993 Riverside High School graduate from Quincy in Logan
County; Valorie Summers of Troy, a 2002 Tippecanoe High School
graduate; and Krista Swallow of Versailles, who graduated from
Versailles High School in
2001.
The second team member is Teri Shearer of Pleasant Hill, who attended
the Upper Valley Joint Vocational School and graduated from Newton
High School in 1983.
“I am very proud of our honorees. I am also grateful to those Edison
faculty and staff who have provided these students with a personal and
rewarding learning experience,” stated Edison President Dr. Kenneth A
Yowell.
“Edison has never shone so brightly in this state-wide competition.”
The four Edison students graduate from the college this year. Foster,
Summers, and Swallow finish associate of arts or associate of science
transfer degrees. Shearer earns an associate of applied science in the
mechanical design option to the mechanical engineering technology
degree.
Swallow transfers Edison credits to Bowling Green to study Visual
Communication Technology. Foster will major in English at Urbana
University. Shearer plans to pursue a four-year degree in Engineering
Technology from the University of Dayton, which teaches this program
on the Edison campus. Summers transfers to either the University of
Dayton, University of Cincinnati, or Purdue University. She will study
chemical engineering.
All four students nominated by Edison were recognized on Ohio’s top
two teams, which are composed of 20 of the state’s most superior
community college students.
Only ten students from Ohio’s two-year community and technical
colleges earned First Team honors, and Edison paced the team with
three. Thirty to 40 nominees from the two-year schools around the
state were placed on the third team.
On April 30 at a banquet in Columbus, the Edison students will be
individually recognized by state legislators and business and
education leaders.
This special event is co-sponsored by the Ohio Association of
Community Colleges and Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the international
two-year college honorary. The event is made possible through generous
support from Honda of America Manufacturing, Inc.
All-State Academic Teams are administered in 33 states. Team selection
is highly competitive and is based on the nominations submitted for
the All-USA Academic Team, an international competition co-sponsored
by PTK, USA Today and the American Association of Community Colleges.
Rankings on the All-State teams are determined by the evaluations in
the international competition.
