Specialist
History:
In 2004, Edison Community College was one of ten Ohio colleges
to receive an Ohio Department of Education/Ohio Department of Job
and Family Services grant to host an Ohio Early Learning Language
and Literacy Specialist (ELLS). The project goal is to strengthen
the language and literacy outcomes of preschool children across ALL
early education settings by providing resources, tools, services and
guidance to early childhood educators.
Our Specialist:
Elisha Hicks was hired to fill this position. She has a B.A. Degree
in Education from Anderson University and a Master of Science Degree
in Elementary Reading and Literacy Education from Walden University. She is a trained Reading Recovery teacher with
seven years of teaching experience.
Specialists’
Responsibilities:
Ms. Hicks’ responsibilities are to assist early education
teachers in developing the knowledge, skills and competence needed
to ensure that our children have a strong language and early
literacy foundation. This work is in collaboration with John
Carroll University and the Ohio Department of Education. Her work includes:
- providing professional
development on Ohio’s early language arts standards;
- assisting administration
and teachers with curriculum and standards alignment;
- providing teachers with
research-based teaching practices;
- providing information and
guidance regarding observation and assessment, and
- providing instructional
resources regarding language and literacy development.
She is required to
coordinate the work at the regional level.

The first “Core Curriculum”
class included teachers and administrators from Head Start programs,
and private and public programs serving preschool children. -2004
