Student Recognition Selection/Mentoring Team

MINUTES OF MEETING

Friday, December 14, 2001

9-10 a.m.

Members present:  Pam Gibellino, Chip Hare, Anna Hudelson, Jane Kretschmann, Ronnie Mayo, Dawn Stinson, and Jane Salisbury, facilitator.

 Members absent: Ray Lepore.

Pam Gibellino shared with the committee the results of an Internet search that she had completed regarding community college student awards/recognition.  Dawn Stinson shared information that she had received from her contact at WSU.  Chip Hare shared information about the program at Kirkwood Community College, including an awards banquet and dance. Ronnie Mayo expressed concern about including Darke County Campus students in these potential awards/recognitions as well as campus clubs and activities.

A number of ideas were generated and expressed as a starting point for recognition:

  • Increase awareness of PTK on campus

  • Include DCC students in the process

  • Target potential students and assist with resume development

  • Consider possibility of 299 class

  • Identify writing and college-level reading skills

  • Identify beyond-the-college awards

  • Consider development of departmental, student worker, and DCC awards

Committee members then narrowed their focus to three major areas of concentration:

1.      Develop a brochure to be sent with college acceptance letter—highlight the importance of student activities and financial aid opportunities through recognition.

 2.      Identify students with recognition potential; include faculty nominations.

 3.      Host a Spring Recognition Dinner.

The committee will begin to identify ways to communicate with faculty concerning their thoughts on brochures and identification of awards/recognitions available.  Initial contact will begin after the semester break.  Ronnie Mayo will develop an internal committee at DCC to determine the best way to identify and include DCC students in the recognition process.

The next meeting will be held Monday, January 28, at 3:30 p.m. in the Board Room.
