Distance Learning – Academic Quality
10/31/02

Present: Brad Reed, Denny Myers, Ann Miller, Cecelia Green, Kathy Clifton, Jane Salisbury
Absent: Sharon Brown, Ken Knapke, Mary Beth Aust-Keefer, Janice Michael

Ann Miller presented results of survey of summer semester students. The students surveyed are in all-online. A survey of webflex students has also been done, and we can compare results. In web-flex survey, students are indicating they want more in that format, students like the personal connection. Students are demanding web enhancements to traditional courses.

Anecdotally, non-traditional students are not comfortable with online. Denny referred to an Indiana State University study presented at Syllabus 2002 conference showing best student performance in a web-enhanced or web-flex format.

Next step: repeat online student survey for fall online students with essentially the same questions. Ann will add the four questions from the web-flex survey, plus a question about why students chose the online format. Repeat incentive and procedure of promoting the survey.

Ann also presented data on customer service calls related to Blackboard. Total number of Blackboard courses in Fall 2002-03 is 98.

Ann shared AQIP survey of students who are not successful.

Denny and Kathy discussed migration of college by cassette to online formats.

Janice via email advocates a formal assessment of students’ readiness to take online or webflex format. How do we present or require that assessment? Possibility of promoting NET100 in “startup” session. Customer service questions: money, schedule, make it non-threatening.

Draft recommendation to present to CQI steering committee with a plan for delivery, address anticipated questions, etc. Use as support AQIP helping students learn, other college initiatives, spread responsibility for delivering. Prepare to present at the January CQI steering committee.

To help faculty improve online instruction, provide feedback to online instructors by attaching aggregated data to the minutes posted to the CQI website, with a note about how individual instructors can see their particular data.
