Lab Deployment - Minutes

Minutes
2-27-2008
Members Present:
Bill Baker, Carol Parete, Brad Reed, Patti Ross, Nathan Walters, Jane
Salisbury
Members Absent:
Jane Kretschmann, Harry Lawhorn
Discussion:
-
Nathan Walters presented a draft
of summer and fall lab deployment actions. Considerable discussion
ensued concerning the actual meeting of deadlines by faculty and
Client Services. Concerns over term start up included labs not
being fully functional on class day 1.
-
Patti Ross and Nathan Walters
agreed that a mid-February time for receiving the completed Lab
Deployment Schedule would support both faculty and Client Services.
Step 1 was modified to read “ITS will review list of software
requirements.” And in the comment section of the lab deployment
sheets, it should be stated whether or not a lab will be used during
the summer so that ITS would be able to image the labs earlier.
-
Timely lab imaging and faculty
testing are keys to finding problems associated with lab stations.
-
Nathan Walters indicated that a
lack of computers on which to image is a problem. Continuing
discussion brought forth the idea of determining what computers
might be used as image computers and as hot spares.
-
Patti Ross suggested we research
a spot on campus where 10 -12 spare computers could be housed for
the image testing purpose. This would also provide a site for
faculty and technician training of specific lab software. This
suggestion will be taken to the CRF committee meeting for further
investigation.
-
Carol Parete asked what might be
happening when an entire classroom lab seems to be experiencing
problems even if the image had worked properly at the time of
testing. Nathan Walters and Bill Baker suggested bandwidth issues
and/or network bottleneck problems might be responsible.
-
Updates for software like Java,
etc. do not occur during the term because the image is locked down.
If companies make changes to programs used by the students and these
changes require an updated version, problems could occur even if the
image worked well at the time the testing was done. No resolution
to the problem, just an acknowledgement that it can happen.
-
Questions were asked about what
will happen when the students have to log on as themselves with
their own passwords. While this issue is being addressed in another
committee, it is essential for all students to know this information
and/or the instructor to know or the labs will be inoperative for
student use on the first day of class.
-
Bill Baker asked why can’t labs
not being used and requiring new equipment or complicated set ups be
imaged earlier, as in early summer, so that problems can be
identified and fixed prior to fall term start up. Nathan suggested
he was trying to work with his team to accomplish just that.
-
Patti Ross indicated that using
project management software might be helpful.
-
The documentation of lab imaging
should be forwarded to the dean in whose divisional responsibilities
fall as soon as possible after completion of the process. This
keeps the process specifics of individual lab imaging current and
therefore, available in the event of personnel changes.
Next meeting to be
scheduled prior to fall semester start up.
