Criterion 5:
Leading and Communicating
Minutes: October 11, 2002
Those present:
Bill Waxman, Patti Ross, Pat Klopfenstein, Jane Salisbury
Those Absent:
Chip Hare, Dr. Yowell
1. The team was
provided with graphs and a synopsis sheet reporting the results from the
communication survey sent to all full-time faculty/staff and adjunct
faculty. Two hundred fifty-two surveys were distributed and 105
returned. The tallied results indicated most people prefer e-mail
communication with face-to-face contact ranking second. At the list
bottom are newsletters, public folders, and the Web.
Considerable
discussion ensued, addressing both how to communicate results and the
intentions of the team, and what kinds of things could be done to
encourage better use of our current system. The following summarizes
current team thoughts:
- An e-mail
should be sent to the college community summarizing the survey feedback
and the team’s intent to address current issues.
- Contact should
be made with Carol Rigola to determine what and when specific training
needs could be met.
- Training should
include: Outlook, phone service, Polycom, Datatel, Web Advisor,
Blackboard, and Web usage.
- CQI updates
should continue to be included in the UPDATE each month.
- The CQI
Newsletter should be sent as a word attachment to a college-wide e-mail.
- Public Folders
should be revamped to make them more user friendly, and a communication
should be shared with all staff indicating where things are found within
the folder system.
- A possible
end-of-semester celebration should be planned to “unveil” spring
semester changes and offerings related to enhanced communication.
Jane Salisbury is
charged with pre-paring an e-mail to staff/faculty, to contacting Carol
Rigola for possible training modules, and for requesting a change in the
Public Folders format.
2. Because of
limited time, changes in organization design were not discussed. They
will be the primary focus of the November meeting. Jane Salisbury asked
that team members think about potential changes that would encourage a
learner-centered environment, be supportive of staff, faculty, and adjunct
faculty, promote communication, and perpetuate the employee working core
values.
3. Brad Reed will
be contacted to determine how Edison might incorporate a modification
of an SBC add into our team thrust. It addressed the importance of
communication in order to maintain strong working and personal
relationships.
