Criterion 5:
Leading and Communicating Committee
Members: Jane Salisbury, Chair; Chip Hare, Pat Klopfenstein, Patti
Ross, Bill Waxman, and Ken Yowell.
Minutes: August 23, 2002
Those present: Chip Hare, Pat Klopfenstein, Patti Ross, Bill Waxman, President Yowell, Jane Salisbury
1. The team reviewed a comment sheet listing specific remarks/questions made during the round robin sessions of the June Strategy Forum, relative to the Criterion 5 Action Project proposal. One area in need of clarification was the title because other readers did not understand the relationship of the title to the goals and target statements. After considerable discussion, the following title was accepted:
Developing leadership and communication via understanding structure, systems, and values.
Working within the ten-word limit determined by AQIP hampered the team in clarifying their intent for the project. President Yowell indicated he wanted to be certain our emphasis represented “cultivating a leading culture” and not merely developing leaders for specific positions.
2. In response to other comments from the Forum, “benchmarking against like
organizations” was added to letter G, possible processes for tracking.
3. Category L, stretch targets:
The stretch targets for year one were discussed. President Yowell clarified the Criterion 5 team’s role in the implementation and measurement processes for work-related, employee core values. Team 5 will play a role in determining how to implement and how to measure effectiveness of the core values, but another group selected by Dr. Yowell will carry out the actual implementation and effectiveness measuring processes. Our team will function as a monitoring body only in terms of how the functions relate to meeting goals for AQIP accountability.
4. Jane Salisbury introduced a draft survey to be considered for collecting staff
information on communication preference methods. The following suggestions
were made:
The survey will be modified to reflect changes and sent to staff and faculty
during the third week of classes. Returns will be requested within one week, to
be placed in Jane Salisbury’s mailbox.
5. The process for studying organizational design/re-design will be discussed at the next meeting.
6. Team members were asked to send their schedules reflecting possible meeting
times to Jane Salisbury. Considering those schedules, the next meeting will be
determined for a time after the surveys have been returned and tallied.
Note: Chip Hare is the only one having forwarded his schedule. It was beeping on the BB when I walked into my office from the meeting. Response time was less than 5 minutes!! He is a winner and he gets the prize. Now I must figure out what the prize is!? JS
