AQIP Criterion 5
Minutes
July 17, 2003

Those present:  President Yowell, Patti Ross, Bill Waxman, Chip Hare, Jane Salisbury

 1. President Yowell called the meeting to order.

 2. Patti Ross presented a list of the various leadership characteristics she had gleaned from the readings of the past year, discussion from our meetings, and the President’s Fall Addresses.

3. Chip Hare built upon her listing with specific thoughts referenced to the organizational “Bulls eye,” Tichy and Senge.

 4. Jane Salisbury presented 14 characteristics categories that summarized her  examination of the seven primary resources we had read from during the past year.

 5. President Yowell listed seven characteristic clusters he believed necessary to demonstrate leadership within a teaching-learning organization.

 6. Bill Waxman shared his leadership characteristics drawn from five references, four new to our study.

 7. Considerable discussion ensued from the various presentation documents.  Many commonalities were present, often using even the same terminology.  It was agreed that another category would be added to the Yowell list—accountability and assessment.  That listing would now include the following:

·        Elements of effective pedagogy

·        Listening skills

·        Group process skills, including facilitation

·        Systems thinking

·        Values-based leadership

·        Enabling and Empowering

·        TPOV à | + | ß

·        Accountability and Assessment

8.   The team worked together to place into the appropriate categories the characteristic behaviors each person had listed.  After establishing a working format, it was decided Patti Ross could complete that task and bring back to the group a draft document.

9.   Jane Salisbury and Patti Ross had prepared the suggested cross-functional teams requested by President Yowell.  That proposal was handed out and the rationale for team assignment was explained.

10. Dr. Yowell clarified that AQIP 5 no longer had obligation to the concept of Extended Deans’ Council, to the development of facilitation curricula by the Servant Leadership participants, or to the cross-functional team concept.

11. For next meeting, Patti Ross will provide a categorical listing of the leadership behaviors desirable for those in teaching-learning organizations, and the team will review it conceptually and functionally.  Possibly a visual model will be designed to represent the interaction and interdependence of the various leadership clusters.

 12.  All team members are asked to forward to Jane their hours of availability during the week of July 28 so another meeting can be scheduled.
