Criterion 5:
Leading and Communicating
Minutes
May 29, 2003
Those present: President Yowell, Pat Klopfenstein, Patti Ross, Bill
Waxman, Chip Hare, Jane Salisbury
1. President Yowell called the meeting to order.
2. Pat Klopfenstein was first to share her thoughts on how implementation
of a conceptual organizational model might occur. She indicated that in
conversation with Patti and Bill, it was agreed the model introduced last
meeting by Salisbury-Hare was too complicated for general understanding.
Those three individuals saw the previous circle models as more appropriate
for where the team and the college community were at this time. Patti and
Bill offered support to Pat’s initial comments, along with Bill’s
providing a written document and drawing promoting more directly the
teacher-learner concept.
3. Jane Salisbury and Chip Hare described their concept of how the
multi-circle model could be implemented, giving specific components
necessary to draw the individual into team concept of organizational
functioning. Both Hare and Salisbury saw no conflict of the single circle
and multi-circle models. To them, one is merely an elaboration of the
other.
4. Dr. Yowell shared his perspective on the charge of the AQIP Criterion 5
team, and he indicated that whatever model was adopted needed to represent
the following:
Coherence
Practical applicability
Sustainability
Accountability
The President sees the design and implementation of a new structure as
moving
from confluence, to convergence, to integration, to harmony. The
implementation
will be evolutionary—from simple, stratified, and incremental TO complex,
comprehensive, and inclusive. This is necessary if we are to “enable in
order to
empower.” (Yowell)
5. Using a picture diagram, Dr. Yowell described his perception of the two
model categories discussed as representing a number line with the
Salisbury-Hare design being on top while being supported by the
Klopfenstein-Ross-Waxman model providing a conceptual foundation. Another
pictorial description was a table with the top being represented by K-R-W
while the S-H perception was the supporting legs.
6. After considerable discussion Yowell stated as his immediate goals: (1)
orienting the college to a changing behavioral model and (2),
orienting/training the existing 14-15 line administrators to a changing
expectation of performance.
7. It was suggested by Patti Ross that the need for an expanded
orientation program for new employees be suggested as a process team to
the CQI Steering Committee. Jane Salisbury will take forward that request.
8. The next meeting will be: June 19, 9:30 – 11:30, in the Board Room
Team members are charged with the following:
Synthesize a model or design merging the thoughts and ideas discussed
today. It can be pictorial and/or prose but needs to be immediately
understandable. It should sequentially identify the skills and tasks to be
done for a fall implementation of organizational re-design. It is to
incorporate both the conceptual and concrete levels of utility.
