Criterion 1: Helping
Students Learn
August 26, 2003
MEMBERS PRESENT: Becky Telford,
Matha Schleinitz, Ruth Barney, Ann Miller, Truman Bashore, Maggie Myers,
and Iden Smith.
The team will meet
on Tuesdays at 1:30 during the fall semester. The meeting dates are 9/9,
9/23, 10/14, 10/28, 11/25, 12/9.
The team discussed
the goals for the year that would be included in the report to AQIP. The
team decided to retain the goals to increase the number of courses using
course management software by 10% and to increase the number of students
doing Blackboard training by 10 % over year one. The goal concerning
improving student success rates was modified to read “Increase the
percentage of successful online students by 2% over year one.”
Since faculty
seemed enthusiastic about the online session during fall duty days, the
Team discussed having a half-day or full-day activity during duty days
prior to spring semester.
The Team discussed
doing additional research concerning the relationship between GPA or other
demographics and success in online courses.
The Team discussed
the need to assign faculty to online classes when the schedule for the
following term is being developed. This would allow them to follow the CQI
Distance Learning guidelines concerning the timelines needed to prepare a
course.
While the feedback
has been limited at this point, faculty generally feel that sending a
postcard to online students about starting the course has had a positive
effect.
The Team has been
asked to add a student member. The chair suggested either asking Phi Theta
Kappa to provide a member or to ask appropriate staff members to suggest a
person. The Team decided to ask Phi Theta Kappa.
