Criterion 1: Helping Students Learn

MINUTES
APRIL 14, 2005

MEMBERS PRESENT: Truman Bashore, Becky Telford, Ruth Barney, Maggie Myers, and Iden Smith

The Team reviewed the Student Evaluation of Instruction form that Becky Telford and Helen Wilcox had prepared. The following changes were suggested:

  • Make the form more readable by highlighting every other item.
  • Change the rating scale from 1 – 5 to A – E scale since the Scantron forms that we use have A – E.
  • Change Item 8 to read “Completed all of the material indicated on the syllabus.
  • The end of Item 22 was cut off on the form provided to the Team.
  • Ruth Barney will have her capstone course students review the form and provide feedback.

The Team decided to wait until the next meeting to discuss possible recommendations that the Team would include in its final report.

The Team discussed the continuation of the Team’s project after the three-year cycle ends. Dr. Salisbury has indicated that all of the project’s activities must continue into the future.

  • Using the College’s dashboard will apparently not be an adequate replacement for the success data that we have been collecting since it will not sort the courses by instructional method. Becky Telford has agreed to continue providing the success rate comparisons to the deans, the Vice-President of Education, and the College President.
  • It was suggested that the faculty support office might take over the job of sending postcards to students enrolled in online courses. The chair will discuss this with the Vice-President of Education.

Becky Telford will give the chair the success rate data for spring by early June. The chair must submit a final report to Dr. Salisbury by mid July.
