Criterion 1: Helping
Students Learn
MINUTES
MARCH 18, 2003
MEMBERS PRESENT: Truman Bashore,
Ruth Barney, Matha Schleinitz, Ann Miller, Becky Telford, and Iden Smith
Becky Telford
provided data from fall 2002. This showed courses that had some online or
Web flex sections and how many students passed, withdrew, or got W, FUW,
or F grades. This raw data will need to be put into the format needed for
the project. The chair and Becky Telford will work on this.
The team discussed
the postcard that we are recommending that online students be sent. Ruth
Barney had sent a draft to the members by e-mail. Ann Miller and Maggie
Myers had provided feedback. The chair will combine the comments to create
the final document. Phone numbers will need to be checked since the number
for Enrollment Services may change when the new phone system is fully
implemented.
Ann Miller
presented an advising checklist of things that should be discussed with
students who are considering online or Web flex classes. Maggie Myers
developed the checklist with Ann and Janice Michael providing comments.
Ann was asked to finalize the document so it can be presented to the
Academic Senate on March 21. The chair will contact David Barth and Cathy
Essinger to get Ann added to the Senate agenda.
The Team discussed
the goals for year two of the project. Some of the year two and three
goals were exceeded during year one so they need to be revised. The Team
decided to:
- Change the
goals for the number of students participating in the short orientation
to Blackboard. The goal for year two will be to increase the number of
students by 10% over the number who participated in 2002-2003. The goal
for year three will be to increase the number of students by 10% over
the number who participated in 2003-2004.
- Keep the
original goals for the number of students who participate in the
two-hour Blackboard training as they were in the original plan.
- Keep the
original goals for the number of sections using Blackboard or other
course management software as they were in the original plan.
- Continue with
the plans to offer a “Best Practices” session during the fall duty days.
- Work on a
document explaining issues related to testing for online courses as well
as courses which use the testing center.
- Proceed with
the analysis of the fall data to find success rates for various
instructional methods.
- Use Zoomerang
to do the survey of unsuccessful students.
- Do the survey
of unsuccessful students and comparative success rates for summer term
as well as fall and spring.
