Q: ID Clarification:
• What happens when Web Advisor creates a user ID between 21 and 24
characters long?
• Duplicate Names (Harry)
• What about the people with less than N characters in their last
name? Default Passwords in Active Directory requires first N letters
of last name combined with last M of ID number, how will Active
Directory handle this?
A: If Web Advisor creates a name that is between 21 and 24
characters long, that will cause a number of problems that will have
to be fixed manually and cause delays
• The problem with limiting Web Advisor to 20 characters on a custom
basis is that future patches will have to be tracked to make sure
that they work with the 20 character ID limit. After some
discussion, we decided that would be more practical than dealing
with the problems caused by the inconsistent limits between
WebAdvisor and NT on user IDs. Carol Marion will do the
customization to limit WebAdvisor accounts to 20 characters.
• People with last names less than a certain number of characters
will cause problems with default passwords being too short. Harry
will pad the beginning of the names with a character which we agreed
to.
Note: The exact number of characters is not listed here,
because we do not want that information to be made public on the web
due to security reasons. As Dan commented in the meeting, it will be
a challenge to communicate the default password as necessary while
not making that information public on the web.
• When users (either students or employees or both) have identical
names, that will cause an error in LDAP because it cannot have
duplicate Display Names in Active Directory. Harry will experiment
with using the SAM name (the main part of the e-mail address) as the
first name in the Display Name. That should not affect any users,
because the Display Name is only seen by system administrators.
Users only see the e-mail address (consisting of the SAM name plus
edisonohio.edu) and the Global Name that is displayed in the address
book.
Q: NT user profiles (Harry) are stored on desktops whenever a user
logs in to the system. With 3,000 student users using a variety of
different desktop machines, that will cause a problem.
A: So, Harry, Chuck, and Nathan will work on a method to save the
profiles on users’ z-drives.
Q: How do we want our sub web to appear? This will contain the SSRPM
Screen and the instructions for use. (Carol R.)
A: We need a page with a link to the SSRPM (password reset page) on
a subpage on the Edison website with instructions and a catchy URL.
She will work on finding an easy-to-remember name. The subpage also
needs to have instructions for using SSRPM, but not the default
password scheme (for security reasons). A link also needs to be put
on WebAdvisor.
Follow Up on Items from previous meetings:
Q: Actual implementation and go-live dates.
A: The plan is for Carol Marion to kickoff the implementation
processes late in the evening on May 26th (Memorial Day) and let the
WebAdvisor account deletion process run all night. The
implementation will continue with remaining steps on the 27th and
28th. The Communications Team will be sending out appropriate
notifications. More details will be reflected in Carol Rigola’s
project schedule.
Q: Printing Control
A: We ran out of time before discussing that.
