Dr. Salisbury began today’s
meeting by inquiring if the team has heard any comments good or bad
from employees regarding the orientation process. She also asked how
the module placement was working for those individuals required to
coordinate the modules or coverage for the modules.
Pat Klopfenstein shared that many
faculty have been questioning why they are required to participate
in the modules. Although she has shared that this process is
required by the president, they do not seem to “get the whole
picture.” She asked whether employees are given a copy of the
orientation checklist or not.
Becky Mann explained that the
personnel department maintains the checklist. Dr. Salisbury added
that the employee’s supervisor has access to the checklist.
Keith Kamerer said he is still
encountering some scheduling conflicts due to teaching schedules,
etc. Keith has been working to accommodate these employees by
excusing them from certain modules or providing alternative means
for completing modules (i.e. an individual tour as opposed to a
group tour.)
Dr. Salisbury advised Keith in the
need to be careful when making these exceptions as Dr. Yowell is
insistent that every new employee is required to attend all
orientation modules. We must be sure to document these instances
very carefully.
Keith also voiced concern that
there is some confusion around some of the modules. For example,
employees are confusing the President’s address with the President’s
orientation module.
Sandy Brubaker shared that the
reaction to the orientation process from her new employees has been
very positive. Sandy assigned liaisons to these employees and feels
that this has been very successful. Keith said that a liaison is a
key function of the orientation process to address day-to-day needs.
Dr. Salisbury will keep track of
participant surveys for all modules in order to do year-to-year
comparisons. Becky Mann will be responsible for tracking module
attendance. All module coordinators are to email Becky Mann
following the completion of each module.
Dr. Yowell has asked Dr. Salisbury
to compile a CQI process manual. She anticipates that the manuals
will be available by mid-November.
Because there is no particular
“process” per se for the orientation, Dr. Salisbury will prepare a
description of the team’s purpose to be included in the manual. She
will also include the module descriptions and the orientation
checklist.
Patti Ross has requested that the
process manuals be available online. She feels this will easier to
keep current.
Mona Walters asked where we stand
in regards to Phil Lootens’ request for a module to discuss
academics at Edison. Sandy will follow-up with Phil this week.
Mona Walters also asked if we need
an “Orientation to Assessment” module. It was decided that this was
an issue for faculty, and could be addressed in other ways rather
than adding another module.
Becky Mann will assist in
coordinating the scheduling of spring modules.
Our next meeting will be held
toward near the end of the spring semester. Date and time to be
announced.
