Frequently Asked
Questions for Faculty:
My student's
username and password do not work.
Please have the student
verify their User ID at WebAdvisor and reset their password using
the Self Service Reset Password Management system. If the student
continues to have difficulties have them call or stop by the Help
Desk located in the Library.

My students are
able to get into Blackboard, but they do not see my class listed.
When Blackboard course
areas are created by Datatel, the courses
are made "unavailable" to students. This gives instructors
the ability to fine tune their course before making it available to
students. Please check to make sure that the course area is available
for student viewing.
To do this click on control panel, course options, settings, and the
course availability link. Set the availability to "yes" and click
submit. If the course is still not showing up for students,
click on control panel, course options, settings, course duration,
and check to make sure that the dates entered are current dates. You
can eliminate this by setting the course duration as continuous.

I have students
that have never used Blackboard before, how can I help them get
started?
Blackboard is pretty
user-friendly. But it can be a challenge navigating until you
know your way around. There is a tutorial available in the
student
section of the Blackboard help site that will explain to your
students how to use the student tools in Blackboard and how to navigate
around your course in Blackboard.
If you are new to
Blackboard yourself, you may want to consider a classroom visit by Cecelia Green to help your students get started with
Blackboard.
When my
student clicks on a link to read a course document, or
assignment it looks like hieroglyphics on their computer.
If your students do not
have Microsoft Office installed on their computer, they can download
(for free) a viewer for all Microsoft products. Students will
find a link
to all of the MS viewers on the Software
Download Links/Viewers and Converters page. If you have uploaded
files in PDF format, your students will need to download a free PDF
viewer from Adobe by visiting the
Adobe website.

I have my
student tests in Microsoft Word, as part of a test bank on CD from the
publisher, how can I get them into Blackboard without having
everything retyped?
There is a program that
works hand-in-hand with Blackboard to create online tests called
Respondus. Please contact Cecelia Green and she will send you
instructions for formatting your document so it can be uploaded
directly to your course site. There is a one-week lead time.
If you think this
is a something that you will be using extensively, and you would like
the ability to do your own test creation, it can be purchased from
Respondus under academic pricing for $79.00. Please contact your
dean or department head to see if there is money in the budget to
purchase your own copy. There is a free 30 day trial of
Respondus available on their web site at:
http://www.respondus.com/download/respondus.shtml
For technical advice regarding
Respondus, please contact Cecelia Green.
In addition, many textbooks come with
electronic test banks which contain an Export to
Blackboard feature. For help with Respondus or testbanks please contact
Cecelia Green at 937-778-8600 ext. 7883 or email
cgreen@edisonohio.edu.

I only have the
paper version of my tests to be added to Blackboard. How can I do
that?
Pat Heckler in faculty
support is a marvel at entering tests into the Blackboard
system. Please bring your test with the answers included, and an
online testing request form to Cecelia Green two weeks
prior to the date the test is needed.
My student was
right in the middle of taking an online test and their computer
crashed, their internet service provider kicked them off, their cat
walked across the keyboard etc...
The test will be flagged
in the grade book when you access the spreadsheet view. You will see
a padlock in the gradebook column beside the students name.
Click on the padlock to reset the test. A dialog box will appear
asking if you want to reset. Once you have completed this step and
submitted the student will be able to take the test again.
Unfortunately, the student will have to start the entire test over.
When deploying your test if you
select the Option to Force Completion you will have to reset the
test if your student runs into these problems. My suggestion is
NOT to select this option but enter a time limit. If you do and the student
has issues as long as they log in to Blackboard during this time
limit they can continue their test from the last SAVED question.
Make sure you remind them to save as they go. They don't have to
save every question but at least save every third or fourth
question. This will make it easier for you and less stressful for
the students. My student was
taking a test in Blackboard and they went over the time limit allowed.
Blackboard will not kick
the student off when the time limit has expired. The test will
be flagged in the instructor's grade book with a red exclamation point
to be reviewed by the instructor. Click on the exclamation point
and then click on submit to accept the student test.

I posted a test
for my students to take, and several of them missed the
deadline. I would like to make the test available again to the
students who missed it.
The test never really
goes away just the link that students see. Click on
control panel, content area where the test is deployed, and locate the
test. Click on modify then modify text options and change the dates that the
test is available. All students will be able to see
the test, but only the students who have not yet taken the
assessment will have access.
I have given my
students an assignment for this week asking them post to the
discussion board, but when I log into the discussion board, I don't
see any posts from any students.
In order to start a
discussion in Blackboard, a forum needs to be set up by the
instructor. Once the initial forum has been established, the
students can start new threads, or respond to other student
postings.

I have scheduled
an online chat for this week for my students. How do they enter the
virtual classroom?
Your students will find the virtual classroom under the
communication tab. It is a good idea to have your students
access the virtual classroom prior to your meeting. You and your
students need to have Java enabled on your browser and turn off
your pop-up blocker (suggestion: add the Bb URL to your list of
allowable sites) to have the
virtual classroom work.
How do I use the
online grade book in Blackboard?
You will find tutorials in the Faculty
Resource Course site in Blackboard on using the grade book.
If you do not see the course site listed when you log in to
Blackboard please contact Cecelia Green at 937-778-8600 ext. 7883 or
email cgreen@edisonohio.edu.
