PHLEBOTOMY
Short Term Technical Certificate
The phlebotomist is a
member of the health care team that deals directly with the
patient obtaining blood samples for laboratory analysis.
Phlebotomists are trained to collect blood and other biological
samples using a variety of equipment and techniques. Attention to
detail, good inter-personal communication skills and compassion
are important characteristics of a good phlebotomist.
Edison Community College
offers a “Short Term Technical Certificate in Phlebotomy.”
Students take courses that will help attain the skills needed to
work as a phlebotomist. Skills needed include keyboarding and
computer usage, medical terminology as it relates to body systems
and diseases, phlebotomy and laboratory skills and
professionalism. The program includes an internship at an
affiliated health care facility where confidence and experience
can be gained.
Program Admission Requirements
To be considered for
admission into the Phlebotomy Program at Edison Community College,
the student will:
- Complete the Edison
Community College Application and pay appropriate fee.
- Provide final high
school transcript (or GED results) and college transcripts (if
applicable) to the college.
- Make an appointment to
take Placement exam(s) with admissions. Placement into
college level English or completion of Basic Writing (ENG 091D)
and College Preparatory Reading (ENG 093D).
- Have a minimum
accumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 on 4.0 scale in
high school or college-level coursework (whichever is most
recent).
- Grade of C or better in
program required courses to complete certificate.
Internship Qualifications
During PLB 150S, before students begin
their phlebotomy internship (PLB 291L/R), they are required to
have on file with the Phlebotomy department:
- Physical vaccinations and medical
health forms completed by a physician,
- Liability insurance
(part of a lab fee in PLB 150), and
- A successful criminal
background check (part of lab fee in PLB 150).
Clinical/Internship sites
may also require:
- Random drug screening
- HIV testing, if exposed
to blood-borne pathogens
- Submission to
treatment/counseling, if exposed to infectious diseases.
