Student Success Stories
Ann Miller
Eight
years ago, I wandered onto the Edison campus a bit shell-shocked
after resigning from my job. I was just going to take one
course. It was very intimidating walking into
a classroom full of fresh young minds just out of high school.
I think scared to death would be the best way to describe
it. My goal for the first semester was to be able to
navigate around the Edison campus without being totally
frightened.
I felt pretty alone at that time. Not sure where to turn for
help, who I could ask about questions and concerns that I
had. I was very fortunate to have instructors who
encouraged me to do my best. I began to feel more
comfortable on campus, and to explore more of the options that
were available to me. I especially would like to thank
Brad Reed, Denny Myers, Jean Shaneyfelt, and John Stibravy
for the push that they often times gave me to keep going.
Mr. Kothman has yet to convince me that Algebra is not a foreign
language, but after 30 years away from Algebra, I am not yet
convinced.
My best advice---start with a class in something that
interests you. Don't jump right into a course of study if
you are unsure. Take advantages of resources such as the
Library, the Learning Center, and the Financial Aid
Office. You will find the people there invaluable in your
success at Edison.
Where I am now---I work for Edison as a Internet
Instructional Administrator. I started as a student worker, then a part-time
employee, and now I am employed full time. My duties
include keeping the Edison web site up-to-date, working with
instructors, college staff, and students to add more content to
the web site on a daily basis. I am also the Blackboard
administrator on campus and work with students and faculty in
online, web-enhanced, and web-flex courses.
When I was contacted to work on this web site, I jumped at the
chance to become a part of this new venture, and to volunteer as
a mentor. My hope is that I can help a few people with my
experiences at Edison to reach their goals.
