Medical
Assistant Certificate Program |
|
The Medical Assistant Program prepares the
learner for employment in a general practice medical office or
other ambulatory setting. This program requires graduates
with the necessary skills, abilities, and attitudes required for
job success. Course work from the Office Systems program
develop the necessary administrative competencies for success in
the workplace in the areas of clerical functions, bookkeeping
and special accounting procedures, and in the preparation of
insurance documentation. Medical Assistant course work
provides the learner with clinical competencies such as clinical
procedures, specimen collection, diagnostic testing, and patient
care procedures. The employment outlook for Medical
Assistants in Ohio is extremely favorable with a projected grown
in job opportunities of over 52% BY 2012.
The Edison Community College Medical
Assistant Certificate Program is accredited by the Commission on
Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org)
upon the recommendation of the Curriculum Review Board of the
American Association of Medical Assistants Endowment (CRB-AAMAE).
Program outcomes, the students will:
- Demonstrate professionalism in
regards to ethical and responsible behavior;
- Demonstrate effective interpersonal
skills with patients, physicians, and co-workers;
- Demonstrate competent written and
medical terminology skills;
- Apply administrative policies and
procedures effectively in the performance of duties;
- Apply clinical policies and
procedures effectively in the performance of duties;
- Apply ethical and legal policies and
procedures effectively in the performance of duties;
- Adapt methods and techniques to the
individual needs or capabilities of patients;
- Apply skills, attitudes, and
dispositions to reflect Edison's Academic Core Values.
NOTE: In addition to complying with the
college's general admission procedures, students who wish to
pursue a Medical Assistant Certificate must have an accumulative
2.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale), test into MTH 098D or higher, or
receive a "C" or better in MTH 097S and place into college-level
English to enter the MED course sequence.
To continue in the Medical Assistant
program students must have a successful background check (in MED
150S) and complete each OSA and MED course with a grade of "C"
or better. Credits transferred from other accredited
institutions must also be a "C" or better.

Graduates of Edison’s
Office Systems & Administration – Medical Office Assistant program
are eligible to receive credit for their prior learning.
Program Admission Requirements
To be considered for
admission into the Phlebotomy Program at Edison Community College,
the student will:
- Complete the Edison
Community College Application and pay appropriate fee.
- Provide final high
school transcript (or GED results) and college transcripts (if
applicable) to the college.
- Have a minimum
accumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 on 4.0 scale in
high school or college-level coursework (whichever is most
recent).
- Make appointment to
take Placement exam(s) with Admissions.
