097D Algebra I
First course in a sequence of four. Basic algebra
topics covered include arithmetic operations and order
of operations on real numbers, application of the
commutative, associative and distributive property to
polynomials, collecting, similar terms, the properties
of integral exponents, and the solution of linear
equations and inequalities in one variable. This
course is designed for students with good arithmetic
skills, but little or no high school algebra.
NOTE: Credits earned in this course do not count
toward degree requirements. Prerequisite:
Satisfactory math assessment score or a grade of
"C" or better in MTH 092D. Syllabus

topics covered include slope concept and equations for
linear functions; solution of systems of equations in
two variables by substitution, addition and Cramer's
rule; solution of linear inequalities; simplification of
algebraic expressions with integer exponents, arithmetic
operations on polynomials; and factoring polynomials.
This course is intended for the student with good
arithmetic skills and some knowledge of algebra.
NOTE: Credits earned in this course do not
count toward degree requirements.
Prerequisite: Satisfactory math assessment score
and one hear of high school algebra, or a grade of
"C" or better in MTH 097D. Syllabus

topics covered include operations with rational
algebraic expressions including complex fractions;
equations and applications with rational algebraic
expressions; rational exponents and the concept of roots
extending to equations with radicals; solution of
quadratic equations using factoring, completion of a
square and the quadratic formula; and operations with
complex numbers. NOTE: Credits earned in
this course do not count toward degree requirements.
Prerequisite: Satisfactory math assessment score
and two years of high school algebra, or a grade of
