Statement for Currently Enrolled Students
Upon
arrival at The Learning Center, students are asked to check in by
answering a few questions about the tasks they will be working on while
in the Center. These answers help reveal information regarding the use
of the Center.
PC Use:
- Computers are to be used
for academic and related purposes only!
- Visiting “chat rooms” and
program sharing sites are not permitted.
- No programs are to be
downloaded without the permission of the Learning Center Staff.
Printing:
- There is no fee for
printing, but students are expected to print only materials relevant
to the course(s) being taken, and to avoid printing materials
unrelated to course work.
- (Refer to Student Hand
Book: Computer Policy, Section 8.0)
Tutoring:
- Tutoring is available at no
cost in a variety of areas, including most 100 level courses.
- The aim of The Learning
Center is meant to help students become more independent learners.
- For this reason,
tutoring sessions, in general, should last no more than 30
minutes.
- After 30 minutes, the
student will be given a task to perform using the skills or
concepts that have been discussed.
- The tutor will then
excuse her/himself, and then come back in a reasonable amount of
time (depending on task assigned) to check the student’s
progress.
- If the student has not
made significant progress on the assigned task, the task will be
reaffirmed, and the student will be left to work independently
again.
- If the student has not
been able to make progress at this point, The Learning Center
Director will be consulted.
i.
The Director may suggest another appropriate
action.
- Should a pattern develop
that indicates the student is becoming too dependent on the tutor’s
help, then the Director will consult with the student’s instructor
or academic advisor concerning the student’s progress in class.
- Furthermore, the use of
The Learning Center will be denied until the student meets with
the Learning Center Director and agrees upon a plan of
independence which may include provisions to limit the amount of
time the student may receive for tutoring.
Cell Phone Etiquette:
- Please set your cell phone
to vibrate or turn it off so as not to disturb other students.
- Please leave the Learning
Center to answer your phone.
Please
contact the Learning Center Director if you have any questions.
