About the Learning Center Tutors

On November 13, 2006, The Edison Community College Learning Center was authorized to certify its tutors at Level I through the National College Reading and Learning Association (NCRLA).

  • December 1, 2006, five tutors were awarded their certificates.  These tutors are Earl Dawson, Jamie Hetrick, Tara Kolker, Amber Wooten, and Nathan Wright.

  • December 7, 2007 Ryan Francis and Katie Drees were awarded certificates.

 To be certified the tutor must complete the following:

  • Ten hours of tutor training (5 hrs prior to the Fall Semester and 5 hrs prior to the Spring Semester);

  • 25 hours of actual tutoring time;

  • New tutors must read, analyze, and write a summary of ten articles from the NCRLA Tutor Handbook during the tutor’s first semester of employment.   “Defining Tutor Responsibilities”, “How to Begin and End a Tutoring Session”, “Role Modeling” , and “Communication Skills” are examples of the articles a tutor must summarize.

  • Each tutor must create or work on some type of project each semester. The projects must relate to learning/tutoring in some fashion, and may include such activities as visiting classrooms to promote the Learning Center services, creating learning pamphlets/handouts, bulletin board displays etc.
