Mechanical Design Option

Students in the Mechanical Design option obtain
the basic mathematical and scientific, and engineering foundations
necessary to mechanically design products for industrial, commercial,
and personal applications. Advanced courses include 3D solid
modeling, engineering materials, applied engineering mechanics and
strength of materials, and machine design. This program option
culminates in a project during which students demonstrate their
breadth of engineering design knowledge by designing a product, from
its original concept, through all the required design considerations
and techniques, to a final design, complete with engineering design
analyses and drawings.
Program Outcomes
The student will: 1) Demonstrate basic competence in developing 2D and
3D engineering design and analysis using applications of mathematics,
physics and engineering mechanics; 3) Demonstrate familiarity with
basic manufacturing processes; 4) Explain the mechanical and physical
properties of various engineering materials; 5) Explain cost
considerations inherent in the planning, estimating, and controlling
of a design project; 6) Design parts/products in accordance with
specified design parameters, utilizing problem-solving skills as
required; 7) Explain the ethical considerations involved in the design
of a product per industry standards; 8) Apply effective interpersonal
and teamwork skills; 9) Demonstrate effective written and oral
communication skills.
