Frequently Asked Questions for Students:

My instructor is using Blackboard this semester but I do not have a username and password.
The same user name and password you use to access the Edison network, Email, and WebAdvisor is what you will use for Blackboard.

Username and password for NEW STUDENTS

If you have never taken a class before at Edison
you will receive your Student ID at the time of registration. To locate your User ID (name) you need to access WebAdvisor, the colleges Registration system:  (https://webadvisor3.edisonohio.edu:8443/WebAdvisor/WebAdvisor). To get started, click on the Prospective Student picture or Account Information link. DO NOT attempt to login as a Current Student. You are considered a “guest” until you complete the account activation process.  In the User Account section click on the link, “What’s my User ID?”.

In order to retrieve your User ID (name) enter the requested information; Last Name plus Social Security Number or Student ID Number. Click on the Submit button and your User ID will appear on the screen. Write this down as you will need this to finish setting up your account.

When your network account is created, it is created with a one-time user default password. The password is composed of the last four digits of your Student ID number plus the first four characters of your Last Name. The first letter of the last name is Capitalized. For example, if your Student ID is 0278957 and your last name is Green your default password will be: 8957Gree. For students whose last names are less then four characters the CAPITAL letter “A” will be added to the end of their name until enough letters are added to satisfy the four-character requirement (i.e. 1234CoxA). Passwords are case-sensitive; UPPER, lower or MiXeD.

Every student will be required to enroll at the Password Management site before they can access the Edison network, email, Blackboard, and WebAdvisor. The username and password assigned to you provides access to all of these applications. To enroll, log on to the Internet and enter the following URL in your address bar: https://edisonhelpdell.edisonohio.edu. Click on the Enroll into SSRPM link. Enter your User ID (name) and default password, ensure “edison” is listed as the Domain Name, click the checkbox to agree to the terms of service, and click Continue. Please enter TWO security questions and answers. Click on Enroll. You will receive a Congratulations screen that you have successfully enrolled. Click close. For security purposes, you MUST reset your default password IMMEDIATELY. To change your password, click on the Reset your password link. Enter your Username and the domain (edison). Click the continue button. Enter the answers to your two security questions, enter the new password, confirm the new password, and click Reset Password. You will receive a congratulations screen stating you have successfully reset your password. You are ready to log in to the Edison network, access your e-mail, log in to Blackboard, and log in to WebAdvisor.

Username and password for RETURNING STUDENTS

All students will be provided an “edisonohio.edu” email account and data storage area.  The edisonohio.edu email address will be the ONLY email address for ALL official college communication. The edisonohio.edu email address will replace all personal email addresses currently housed in WebAdvisor and Blackboard. In addition, the student will have a User ID (name) and password to access the Edison Network, E-mail, Blackboard, and WebAdvisor. All students enrolled in classes Summer and Fall (unless you were enrolled in summer classes) Semester 2008 will need to follow the instructions for New Students.

Returning Edison online students will continue to use their Edison network username and password to access their classes.

If you have forgotten your password you can use the Password Management web site to reset your password. You will need to know your TWO security answers.

Note: Your User ID (name) will remain the same throughout your time at Edison. Your password will expire every 90 days and will have to be reset using the Password Management web site. In addition, you can use this tool to reset your own password if you forget it. You will need to know your TWO security question answers. You are limited to 3 attempts to answer your security questions when resetting your password or you will be locked out of the network. If this occurs you have to call (937-778-8600 or 800-922-3722 ext. 711) or stop at the Help Desk to have your account unlocked. The Help Desk is located in the Library. The hours or operation are:

Mon – Thurs: 8:00 am – 8:00 pm
Friday 8:00 am – 4:00 pm (Closed Summer)
Saturday 10:00 am – 2:00 pm (Closed Summer)
Sunday - Closed

I can get into Blackboard, but I do not see my class listed.
Blackboard course areas are created automatically and the courses are made "unavailable" to students. This gives instructors the ability to fine tune their course before opening it to students. Please check with your instructor to make sure that the course area is available for student viewing.

All students are automatically enrolled in courses through integration with the college's Datatel system.  This process can take from 24-48 hours (business days).  If you switch sections, especially on a Friday, please be patient as the information filters through the system.

I have never used Blackboard before, how can I  get started?
Blackboard is pretty user-friendly but it can be a challenge navigating around until you know your way.  You can find out more in the  Getting Started in your Blackboard Learning System Course tutorial. The tutorial will explain  how to use the student tools in Blackboard and how to navigate around your course in Blackboard.

When I click on a link to read a course document, or assignment it looks like hieroglyphics on my computer.
If you do not have Microsoft Office installed on your computer, you can download (for free) a viewer for all Microsoft products.  You can find a link on the Software Download Links/Viewers and Converters to the download site for all of the Microsoft viewers.

If your instructor has uploaded files in PDF format, you will need to download a free PDF viewer from Adobe by clicking on the software download links on the Adobe website.

I was right in the middle of taking an online test and my computer crashed, my internet service provider kicked me off, my cat walked across the keyboard etc...
Depending on how the instructor deployed the test you may be able to log back in to Blackboard and restart from your last SAVED question. The test or quiz should have instructions explaining if this option is available to you. If not, please contact your instructor and explain what happened. Your instructor will be able to go in and reset the test so that you will have access.  Unfortunately, you will have to start all over again at the beginning of the test.

I was taking a test in Blackboard and I went over the time limit allowed.
Blackboard will not kick you off when the time limit has expired.  The test will be flagged in the instructor's grade book. Please contact your instructor regarding their policies for online testing.

I was supposed to take a test in Blackboard and I missed the deadline.  I can no longer find the announcement  link for the test.
Please contact your instructor for help.

My instructor has given me an assignment for this week asking me post to the discussion board, but when I log into the discussion board, I don't see any place to post my comments.
In order to start a discussion in Blackboard, a forum needs to be set up by the instructor. Once the initial forum has been established, you can start new threads, or respond to other student postings.  You can find out more about using the discussion board in the by reading the tutorials available on the Blackboard Instruction Sheet page.

My instructor has scheduled an online chat for this week. How do I enter the virtual classroom?
You will find the virtual classroom under the communication tab and then select collaboration.  It is a good idea to access the virtual classroom prior to your meeting.  You will need to have java enabled and turn off your pop-up blocker (or add the URL for Bb to your list of allowable sites) in your browser to have the virtual classroom work. You can find out more about using the virtual classroom in the tutorial on the
Student Questions/Answers/Instruction Sheets and Manuals page.
.
My instructor has assigned me to participate in a group. How do I access the group and the associated features.
Your instructor will need to set up the groups. Once this is accomplished you will find the groups for your class listed under the Communication section in the Group area. The group function in Blackboard allows you and your fellow teammates to communicate privately via e-mail, the discussion board, and virtual chat. These areas all work the same as the class e-mail, discussion board, and virtual chat. In addition, the group area contains a File Exchange tool that allows team members to upload a document for access by everyone in the group.
